This interdisciplinary course covers a range of topics related to infectious diseases and their impact on public health. The course emphasizes the “One Health” approach, which recognizes the interconnection between human, animal, and environmental health.
We will discuss the main waterborne diseases in Brazil and their implications for Public Health, as well as strategies for genomic surveillance of wastewater, arbovirus transmission, and neglected diseases such as Chagas disease, malaria, leishmaniasis, HTLV-1, leprosy, and tuberculosis. Aspects of the Brazilian tropical disease scenario and current lines of research in the country will also be discussed. Finally, we will explore how these neglected diseases affect the state of Bahia, focusing on their environmental, population, and territorial aspects. Some site visits will occur throughout the program.
